Message From the Section Chair
W hat an honor to have this year to serve you as Chair
of the largest section of the American Water Works
Association. We are nearly 6,000 members strong, a
versatile combination of strength and diversity.
As we move forward together, I would like to share some of my
enthusiasm about what the Section can offer you to enhance
your career, build relations, gather knowledge as well as share
your own professional wealth. Being a part of the Section often
transcends many of us from having just a job, to having a career
in this great industry. This year I am working to build on the fine
work accomplished by my predecessors as well as help the Section
prosper from the dedication of your fellow leaders coming
up the ranks.
The Section’s volunteer leadership - committee and division chairs,
trustees, directors, and the executive committee—are focused
on the next stage of development including expanding course
subject matter to offer you more diverse training opportunities;
modernizing the way we operate with better online accessibility to
resources; leveraging state grant money to offer courses for you
to conduct required water loss audits; linking professionals with
the ideal service provider at our membership networking events;
as well as continuing to revise and develop the Sections Policy
Manual so that our growth is guided by sound and transparent
polies which serve you.

Our Board is also committed to strengthen service, not only to
members through opportunities such as quality courses and conferences,
but to take a step higher. The Section’s new Philanthropy
Council was formed to facilitate service to our water communities
through the Section’s student chapters and young professionals
with the CA-NV AWWA Scholarship Fund. The Council will also
acknowledge the national and global water community through
Water For People and the Community Engineering Corps. The
programs attract youthful ideas to our aging industry. I’m excited
to help guide our Sections into growing our philanthropic stability
through endowments and other creative means.
If you aren’t already a member, please do join us! Bring your ideas
to any one of our many professional committees you can find on
our website. We can help each other grow professionally in our
industry and feel rewarded doing it. We are a service industry: Be it
a vendor, operator, policy maker, engineer or other professional, we
serve the people one of the biggest assets to global public health.
We have so much intellectual and talent wealth together. It’s no
coincidence that the word water has a “W” and an “E” in it. Make this
the year to participate any way you can—Together We are Water!
