16 | ROCKY MOUNTAIN WATER MAY 2017 FEATURE THE CITY OF SALIDA sits right in the middle of Colorado in the Upper Arkansas River Valley, beautifully settled in the heart of the Rockies. The town attracts tourists from near and far who are seeking a wide variety of outdoor activities, from camping, hiking, and fish-ing, to skiing, snowboard-ing, and mountain climb-ing, and boasts of a world-class zipline adventure park that draws the more daring to the region. Salida also offers small town charm and was named by Americans for the Arts as among Ameri-ca’s 100 Best Small Art Towns. Lonnie Oversole is Plant Manager for the water treatment facility that serves Salida’s approximately 6,000 residents, and supports the influx of visitors that is critical to the area’s economy. In recent years, Oversole became frustrated by the consistently short filtration run-times and large amount of water wasted by the four dual-cell Wheeler bottom filters used to clean the region’s drinking water. In an area with a history of dry seasons and drought-like conditions, the need to care-fully conserve water is particularly critical.  “Of course, I was aware that our current equipment and processes were out of date; after all, the plant was built in 1959, using the limited technol-ogy available at the time,” Oversole said. Indeed, water treatment and fil-tration have evolved sig-nificantly over the past 60 years reflecting the major advances in technology, manufacturing, and other related areas. Oversole also knew that in order to drive valuable improvement in pro-ductivity, he would need to update his entire filtration system.  “While the filter media was a top priority for replacement, I realized it would also be beneficial to install new underdrain and add air scour to the filters to maximize performance,” he said. Filter Rehab Saves Colorado Utility 50,000 Gallons of Water a Day By Bruce Wolfe A new underdrain, filter media, and wash troughs were installed in the Salida, Colorado, water treatment plant, allowing the utility to realize significant efficiency improvements from day 1.
