Probably the biggest and long anticipated change relates to rules
governing Life Members (LMs). This is the fastest-growing demographic
category in our organization. Currently to qualify as a LM, one
needs simply to have been a member in good standing for 30 years.
Once that point is reach, one no longer is required to pay membership
The recent rules revision, which also goes into effect January 1, 2012,
mandates that, to qualify as a Life Member, the following must be
• Individuals need to have been Association members in good standing
for 30 years and be a minimum of 65 years of age. This minimum age
requirement is a common practice in other organizations. Currently
recognized LMs are exempt from the minimum age requirement.
• However, they and all new Life Members will no longer be
exempt from paying dues. A new dues fee of $85 per year will
be initiated, which represents a fee that is 50% of the 2012
individual member fee.
• Life Members who are retired may re-classify as a Retired Member
and pay approximately $40 per year.
Nobody likes to pay more for something than they have to. However,
even with the increase in membership dues, the benefits and advantages
of AWWA membership are still a great bargain, especially when cost/
benefit comparisons are made with other industry organizations. S
