Brady! Although we lost that year, our team still did well in the final
round, and I’m very proud of Scott and Dave’s efforts.
As we reflected on that day back in 2009 we talked about our
deficiencies and what we needed to do to improve for next year’s
competition. The first thing I did was convince my teammates to
change our name from the Ultra-Menbrains to the Smooth Operators.
Somehow I thought that was a step in the right direction. We
focused on studying hard once again and fine-tuning a few areas
before the competition. From time to time Dave and Scott would
come up to me and ask “Can you imagine if we win?” I have to admit
that the question put pressure on me to study even harder. We were
all hungry for a win, and we knew we had it in us and there was no
way we would let each other down.
After a year of diligent study, the Smooth Operators were there to
represent ACWD at the 2010 Top-Ops competition. The preliminary
rounds went extremely well. We were in the final round once again.
I couldn’t let the final round be any different than the previous
rounds although it really was. The big difference was that now we’d
be competing in front of the entire conference including all of the
industry leaders. I wanted to prove that the Smooth Operators were
among the best of the best. It seemed like a tall order to fill but I
had the confidence in our team to do it. I could not let being in the
final round, and in front of such a large crowd, intimidate me. I had
to remind myself that it was just another round of questions. We
couldn’t think about victory without first thinking about the task at
hand. We’d all studied too hard to let this get away from us.
