loss that I inform the CA-NV AWWA family that Linda
Contreras, 40, the Section’s Director of Events and Marketing,
was killed in a head-on collision in September after the AWWA
Regional Meeting of Section Officers in Montana. She was traveling
alone and died instantly at the scene.
The tragic loss of Linda leaves a gaping wound in the hearts of the staff
of the CA-NV Section, the Association, the volunteers who worked with her,
and many others in the water community. This is also a huge blow to the work
of the Section, given that Linda’s responsibilities included the 2017 Annual
Fall Conference, the North American Water Loss Conference scheduled for
December in San Diego, ACE18 in Las Vegas in June 2018, projected website
improvements, and so much more. Linda had become truly central to so much
of the Section’s work and the progress we have made in the six years since she
returned to the staff.
The work of the Section will go on, but we will not be the same. We will
mourn Linda’s death and continue to feel the impact of her loss. Linda pushed
herself to produce excellence in her work. She was creative in her problem
solving—no challenge was too large or insurmountable—and she will be
remembered among our staff as an ever-willing and helpful mentor.
Linda’s love of her family was also immeasurable. She had visited them
in Missouri before traveling to Montana and was especially excited to spend
time with her first niece, eight-month-old Mia. Her mother reports that she had
picked out and brought with her a costume to turn little Mia into a unicorn for
her first Halloween, a gesture that was characteristic of the fun and loving spirit
that Linda’s great smile and frequent, hearty laugh showed to the world.
Our hearts go out to her entire family and to her life partner, Louie. Details
about opportunities for CA-NV AWWA members and friends to participate
in recognizing and remembering Linda will be posted on our website as they
become available. S
