Working TO Balance
BY TOM GOHRING
DECEMBER 20, 2013. AS THE SACRAMENTO REGION CONTINUED TO ENDURE the
driest weather conditions in our history, members of the Water Forum’s Dry Year
Conference met to discuss the dwindling water levels at Folsom Reservoir and the
Lower American River and what could be done to balance the water needs of both people and fish.
The Water Forum was formed in 2000 to provide a
way for water managers, environmentalists, business
leaders and other diverse stakeholders to meet two co-equal
goals: provide a reliable, long-term water supply
for the Sacramento region and protect and preserve the
fishery, wildlife, recreational and aesthetic values of the
Lower American River.
Gathered in the East Meeting Room at the Tsakopoulos
Library in downtown Sacramento, the group’s task was to
consider potential and worst-case scenarios for continued
dry weather through March and come to consensus on rec-ommendations
for releases from Folsom Reservoir to offer
