AFTER SOME 15 YEARS OF PLANNING, negotiations, environmental challenges, realignment
of the roles of the involved water agencies and over 40 public meetings, the Carlsbad ocean
desalination plant has broken ground and is on target to meet its expected 2016 operation date.
According to Poseidon Vice President Peter MacLaggan, the facility is the largest seawater desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere and
will augment San Diego County’s water supply with up to 54 million gallons per day (GPD) of fresh, high-quality drinking water for a total
