conducted career fairs, and many attend Section functions, including
our local membership mixers, our fall and spring conferences and
our training workshops. Two members of student chapters have be-come
active in the Young Professionals Committee. Chris Martinez,
president of the Cuyamaca College chapter is the committee’s Vice
Chair, and Chris Berkoben from the SDSU chapter took the role of
Secretary at the Fall 2018 Conference!
The student membership is made up of future engineers, scien-tists
and operators, along with a faculty advisor. They are very enthu-siastic
and passionate about learning more of the water industry’s ins
and outs and finding that future water industry career opportunity.
The Section supports student chapters with funding up to $1,500
per academic year, which is used by each chapter to offset costs (e.g.,
10 SOURCE spring 2019
attending conferences, chapter meetings or tours). In addition,
the Section has budgeted up to $1,500 of funds to pay the cost
of 75 student memberships to AWWA and provides scholarship
opportunities. A Section liaison works with each chapter.
You Can Help
If you’re a water professional, I encourage you to get in-volved
and help the next generation gain the tools they need to
become successful water professionals. We’re currently looking
for a liaison for Ventura College and we need a second liaison
for the UCLA chapter.
Also, is your community college or university missing
from our list? Would you be interested in championing a new
student chapter at your alma mater or a school near you? Think-ing
about the future, we all need to recruit our replacements,
and establishing and supporting student chapters are great
ways to ensure that happens. If you want to help, contact Tim
Williams (firstname.lastname@example.org or 916-858-2722) or Ar-mando
Apodaca (Section Membership Engagement Manager
(email@example.com or 909-291-2119).
