In October 2012, in preparation for California’s anticipated new Cr-6
drinking water standard, the City of Davis, California, initiated a
bench test pilot study with Kennedy/Jenks Consultants and Envirogen
Technologies to evaluate biological filtration as an alternative sustainable
Cr-6 treatment technology.
Cr-6 levels are relatively high in wells in Davis and Woodland service areas,
as well as other water agencies in the greater Sacramento area that rely
on groundwater, and these communities are anticipating compliance issues
with the Cr-6 maximum contaminant level (MCL) range the state has been
considering. Davis, for example, has concentrations of Cr-6 greater than 10
mg/l in 13 of its 21 municipal groundwater wells.
Because current solutions potentially available are expensive to construct
and operate and will add complexity to the community’s well system, which
currently has no treatment in place, the city collaborated with the Water
Resources Association of Yolo County, Sacramento Groundwater Authority
and State Water Resources Control Board to create a regional approach to
funding the project, which will reduce Cr-6 to Cr -3 and a required nutrient,
which would then be removed by filtration.
Deliver results.
