Section Announces New College Scholarships START SPREADING the word: CA-NV AWWA is offering both undergraduate and graduate scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year for students interested in careers in a drinking water. The Section will offer four $2,500 scholarships for students in two- and four-year college degree programs and two $5,000 scholarships for those pursuing graduate studies at the Masters or Doctorate levels. The goal is to support students planning careers as water/wastewater treatment plant and field/distribution system operators, chemists, lab technicians, biologists, ecol-ogists, environmental and civil engineers, mechanical/electrical/plumbing trades, en-vironmental sciences, public administration, financiers, economists . . . whatever supports safe drinking water. Applications and detailed instructions are available on the Section’s website www.ca-nv-awwa.org. Applicants must submit: 1) a completed form for the ap-propriate scholarship, 2) two recommen-dation letters from teachers or others fa-miliar with their activities, 3) statements on their interests and career plans, and 4) transcripts of academic records. Ap-plications and support materials must be submitted by March 1, 2016. Awards will be announced on June 1, 2016. Win-ners will also receive a complimentary student AWWA membership for the duration of their degree programs and complimentary student registration at the Section’s 2016 Annual Fall Conference. Graduate scholarship winners will be in-vited to present their work at appropriate CA-NV conferences, and the Section will endeavor to find internships and other opportunities for awardees. The goal is to raise a $1 million endow-ment that will provide $40,000-$50,000 annually for additional scholarships. Ex-pect to see a variety of fundraising activ-ities to get this going, including opportu-nities for individuals and organizations to sponsor “named” scholarships.
