FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
AS I REFLECT on the quarantine years
of 2020 and 2021, I realize that we’ve
endured a time of social isolation. Maybe
because we’ve had to work harder at it,
nothing has felt more important than being
connected to one another. We are excited
for the opportunity to return to in-person
activities during our Spring Conference at
Disneyland® Hotel, to be held April 11-14.
Being able to see your faces and network
in real time as we continue to deliver top-notch
training and education is something
we are looking forward to.
During the time of quarantine, we lost
several of our valued members and
co-workers. On the weekend of October
15, 2021, the Section lost friend and lead-er
David K. Clark. David was a longtime
AWWA member. He was a former Chair
of our Management Development and
Leadership Committee (2016–18) and
the Workforce Development Council
(2016–17). A frequent SOURCE contrib-utor,
Clark worked at Metropolitan Wa-ter
District of Southern California for 27
years, most recently as its design section
manager since 2018. He joined AWWA
and the CA-NV Section in 1995 as he
began his career in water. David lived a
life of service and connectivity to those
around him, as a water professional and
as a mentor to the masses. His sudden
passing reminds us to appreciate the peo-ple
in our lives and to extend his love of
training, imparting wisdom and sharing
knowledge about the water industry to
the community we serve and beyond. His
death also reminds us to value the people
in our lives while they are still here. As
a tribute to David, CA-NV AWWA will
be honoring him with the AWWA David
Clark Memorial Scholarship. You can

Also, during this time of COVID and
quarantine, we learned how our indus-try
is not immune to the Great Resignation,
aka the recent trend in which employees
voluntarily are leaving their jobs to either
enjoy retirement or shift to new jobs. We at
CA-NV Section learned that several mem-bers
retired or left jobs for one that aligns
with their values, which came more clear-ly
into focus during the pandemic (fami-ly
commitments, reduced commute time,
flexibility, workplace safety protocols,
etc.) Several of our Section leaders and ac-tive
volunteers are included in this shift,
and Section staff is working diligently to
update organizational charts. Members
can update their profile with contact in-formation,
emails and phone numbers on-line.
(Find instructions on how to update
information inside this issue on page 8).
Lastly, it’s that time of year when nonprof-its
put out their annual fundraising appeal
to the masses. It is the cornerstone of what
we do. It expands our reach tenfold. Be-tween
nonprofits, public agencies, public
utilities and consulting firms, we regularly
connect many different entities that gra-ciously
trust our role as a backbone orga-nization
in facilitating good work. Frankly,
our long list of partners sometimes aston-ishes
me, and we appreciate the support.
Together, we have leveraged thousands
of dollars in the last year on behalf of the
Philanthropy Council. It is an honor to do
this work, even more so during times of
crisis and need. Thank you, in advance for
your ongoing financial support — our val-ued
CA-NV AWWA members!
As we prepare for a new year with the
return of our activities, I’m more focused
on our mission statement and want you to
know that we value each member for let-ting
us “lead, educate, and serve” you. S
Mission Statement
Dedicated to leading, educating, and serving the
water industry and our communities.
